Seasons of Connecticut: A Year-Round Celebration of the Nutmeg State (Positively Connecticut)

A beautifully illustrated four-season celebration of the Nutmeg state by
Emmy award?winning journalist and native Diane Smith

Roses displaying their first delicate blooms. Farmer’s markets and sailing regattas. Giant pumpkins in
time for Halloween. A sleigh ride, white churches, and snowy woods. The four seasons are why many of us live in Connecticut and why others visit. In other parts of America, it may be warm or rainy all year, or snowy and cold for lengthy stretches. In Connecticut we take pleasure in four seasons that are distinctly different.

Seasons of Connecticut is a full-color, season-by-season celebration of the Nutmeg state by celebrated television and radio reporter Diane Smith, who has told the stories of the people and places of Connecticut for two decades. She presents more than sixty vignettes?inspiring, warm, funny, and sometimes downright strange?that will make you feel good about living in Connecticut, or make you want to visit. From a springtime kite-flying festival to country fair cook-offs in summer, and from fall wine tastings to UConn Huskies basketball in winter, the stories reveal the beauty and the personality of the state throughout the year.

Flowers by Stafford Conservatories

Flowers by Stafford Conservatories

Stafford Conservatories has been in business in Stafford Springs, CT for many years. They used to be one of the largest growers of chrysanthemum cuttings (starter plants) in the country. They are also well-known for their floral design in cut-flower arrangements. I worked here in high school as a delivery boy, and it remains to this day one of my favorite jobs. They're located on Buckley Highway (route 190) east of the center of town.

Connecticut Foundry

Connecticut Foundry

The Connecticut Foundry in Rocky Hill, CT. was owned by Mr. Arthur Enquist. For years it was a very successful enterprise. In the 1970’s and early 1980’s Japanese imports took their toll on this business and it closed. The facility has been unoccupied since. Though it’s on a prime piece of land alongside the Connecticut River it’s unlikely to be sold due to potential environmental clean-up costs.

Hidden History of Connecticut

Connecticut's history is full of engaging and fascinating stories--rocks that are national monuments, the "people's sculptor," football players on chapel finials, moons on the Travelers calendars, artists Frederic Church and Eric Sloane and even a Thanksgiving Day touch football game with a future president. These are tales from Greenwich to Enfield, from Sharon to Old Lyme and so much in between. Follow along with historian Wilson Faude in this "must-have" Connecticut book as he traverses the state in search of hidden history.
